During my early years, it was very difficult to learn the techniques of the past. At the beginning of the 20th
century with the advent of modern art, artists' studios where those techniques were taught had fallen out of
favour and were no longer available.  After a short period of painting abstracts, I realized that to gain real
freedom of expression, I needed to overcome significant technical difficulties. I embarked on a self-taught
journey and turned to the Great Masters of the past to seek their teachings.

Copying paintings has been my way to re-acquire the techniques that have enabled great artists such as
Vermeer to craft masterpieces that still shine hundreds of years later and attract millions of visitors to
museums. It has been a very humbling experience that has given me a hands-on appreciation of the incredible
level of difficulty inherent in their works.
